INFLUENCES - PART ONE

From the early, formative years of his drumming right up to the present day, Gary has drawn huge inspiration from a broad and diverse range of players. In this bumper length videocast, Gary discusses the value of looking back and researching the pioneers and revolutionaries in drumming in all genres of music and contemplates how expanding this study can be to your vocabulary and expression. In this first videocast on influences, he highlights six drummers who have had a profound impact on him and shares his reasons for the influence they have had on his own expression at the drums.
The featured drummers here are: Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Jack DeJohnette, Stewart Copeland, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. And through a series of improvised drum solos, Gary attempts to capture the essence and spirit of each of them. Can you guess who might have had an influence on his playing, for example, on Allan Holdsworth’s IOU album?
This is not about transcribing a drummer and copying his or her licks, but about casting the net wide and adding flavours of inspirational influences into your own personal mix.
Together with this videocast, Gary provides a downloadable PDF of links to performances by the featured drummers that he has found to be tremendously inspirational over the years.
