"I really enjoy your unique approach to teaching and informing that I can’t really say I’ve seen in any other study materials. Thanks for the mentoring, kindness, and friendship" - Michael Malo, Montreal, Canada
In this videocast, Gary explores a typical scenario of having to find a good playing approach to a piece of music like a pop song or dance track, when faced with instruction by someone such as a band leader or music producer. Here, to demonstrate this, Gary presents a dance-beat track which he performs from the kit in two contrasting ways. In his first played example, he takes a straight ahead approach, keeping the playing safe, solid but pared down. In contrast, in his second pass, he presents a version in which he has free rein to inject more personality and creative ideas into the mix. He goes on to analyse the track and discuss various production elements, such as rhythmic devices, transitions and using different components of the kit, that can be effective in bringing more imagination and colour to this type of music.
The pop track comes packaged in with the videocast as a drum-less mp3 audio file with and without click for you to download and try out your own different approaches, as well as a PDF of the drum chart.
